Spring is in the air

We’ve just entered my least favourite time of the year .. when the mud comes! I never understood before moving to Haliburton why the ground was so soft and mucky in the spring. It’s because the frost leaves the ground from the top down .. so, as the frost melts away there is still a layer of frost underneath that the water can’t penetrate, so it pools on top and supersaturates the earth making it squishy! Once the frost is totally gone the water seeps downward and the ground becomes firmer. I’m sure scientists would be a bit squeamish about this less than scientific explanation but hopefully you’ll understand what I mean. Entered by Marie Gage www.willowbeach.com
