Parenting a baby loon!

July 26th, 2007: about noon today there was quite a raucous happening on the lake .. two loons were crying loudly and persistently for quite some time. I went and got the binoculars to see what was happening as they seemed to be in distress. Just as I returned with the binoculars there was an answering call and suddenly there were a group of 3 loons .. a mommy, a daddy and an adolescent. I’m not sure whether the baby had strayed off or one of the adults because the baby is almost as big as the parents now .. but, somehow they had been separated and were happily reunited. Strangely they seemed to hang around out the front of the resort for most of the afternoon and I later observed what appeared to be a fishing lesson. All three loons were in a circle facing each other and dove down at exactly the same moment! I think they were trying to teach the young one to find food for itself.
